Spring Time Things and Sewing Chaos.
Field trip days are fun days for me. When the middle class took themselves away to COSI, I was left with two classes with the fourth graders and no books to check bar theirs. I was able to leave early and get some shopping done and still get home in time to soak up the glorious sunshine. When the grade three and four students were away enjoying a field day, I had enough time to make all my little name tags for the coming school year. What joy it is to relax at school as it is not often that happens!
Another wedding weekend has come and gone for the Kidron congregation. The youth visiting were the pleasant type and they came with all their neighbors and friends. The ball games were quite lively and the three nets were filled for the entirety of Saturday. One thing I will mention: the women noticed how the menfolk at this wedding were quite the gentlemen. If you gave a set, you got it back and complements were thrown around with gusto. Oh, and they held open doors. The bare minimum is quite impressive these days. It is refreshing to enjoy the company of these kind of young men at a wedding.
It was realized that people do not seem to like long programs on Saturday night suppers. People get quite restless when they just sit at a table for a time. The youth especially were ready to tear off to play volleyball.
It is very nice to not have to serve at a wedding if you are in good company. It was the first time in a long time that I could simply relax at the reception. We chatted with the young men across from us and learned that gossip is a bad thing, but talking good about people is not gossip. Also is it really true that guys think girls gossip all the time?
There was one mishap at the reception that had the food committee and grilling guys in a pinch. The meat had been grilled the night before and had been left to cool. When at five o’clock the morning of the wedding the meat was to be reheated, it was found that none of it had cooled down properly. Some thought it would be fine to serve it, but can you imagine if an entire wedding reception was food poisoned! Somehow they managed to wrangle up enough chicken to feed the masses and it was quite delicious. Later it was learned that the bride had actually wanted to serve chicken. What luck!
It was decided that we youth girls would gather and again play the “glorious game.” So volleyball and snacks and good times were had that Tuesday evening. The world was washed by a lovely spring thunder storm and we danced like children in the cooling rain. Once again, girl’s deals are just a fun experience.
I have been kept busy with sewing what I thought would be a fun little project: a quilt dress. It took a good long time to cut the 4x4 squares out of each of my fabric scraps and I had a very sore back after bending over the serger and serging almost 200 squares. Note to self: if I ever do this again, make the squares much bigger than 4x4. The next step was quite fun, assembling the squares into a pattern. Sewing the strips together wasn’t all that tedious, but after cutting the dress out of the quilted pieces, I had to back stitch every seam so it would not fall apart. Oh, and then serge the pattern pieces and finally actually sew the dress together! Fingers crossed that it will turn out alright as it is to be my program dress.
At a recent family deal, some funny things got said. Someone was saying that in Idaho where they raise potatoes for McDonald’s, the farmers spray the plants with this substance to grow long potatoes for long French fries. Apparently the spray is so poisonous that the farmers won’t enter the fields for two weeks after. “That’s why they taste so good!” was the response from a great aunt. They also spoke of biodegradable containers and the like. My father was airing his opinion about paper straws and how they get soggy as you drink. “They start to biodegrade right into my drink.” said the great uncle.
The school children are ready for summer. Their teachers are too! The interest in school is waning and all of the faculty would rather be outside. Nevertheless we must persist. This is our last full week and with a short week, school will be out on May sixteenth. What a glorious time that will be!
As someone said, “A little bit of summer is what the whole year’s about!”
